Local Content Creation for the City of Cape Town (Project Ubasha)

E-mail Print

Also in 2006, InfoWizz was appointed to project manage a local content creation and management project for the IS & T Directorate's eGovernance Unit at the City Of Cape Town. This involves internally and externally focused knowledge and content management work in the following areas:

  • Strategy development for knowledge management, content management and content creation for all eGovernance projects.
  • Online content creation and management for the City Of Cape Town's Smart Cape Access sites. This is a citywide project, installing free Internet and email access into the public libraries. The first phase was the installation of the system, and was completed in 2005. The Smart Cape Access Project is the largest open source project in the Southern Hemisphere.

The objective of the second phase was to give these communities an online presence, and make their Internet experience more relevant and valuable to them. See http://www.smartcape.org.za/

This project is the first online local content creation project in South Africa.

E-mail Print

This project (2006 - to date) involved the development of a portal aimed at assisting semi-skilled/ unskilled job seekers to find work opportunities, and employers to find workers, and in this way, reducing the numbers of unemployed persons in the Province. This is to be achieved by creating a "one stop job shop" for all government jobs and skills development initiatives within the Western Cape.

Standardisation of Library Systems

E-mail Print
City of Cape Town LogoInfoWizz was engaged on a Library Systems Standardisation project for the City of Cape Town's Library Services. Rasagee worked on the various phases of this project as its project manager from October 2003 - May 2005. She was also responsible for the strategy formulation, business analysis and research components of this project.

In phase 1 of the project, InfoWizz and Business Data Solutions (a Cape Town based technology company) were appointed to perform the tasks necessary to provide the City of Cape Town with recommendations and supporting rationale in order to help the Social Development Directorate adopt a new, standardised library management system for their 97 libraries.

Over and above this, as a follow up to the business case, in Phase 2 (2004 - 2005), InfoWizz also undertook an investigation into the viability of utilising Open Source Software for a library management system within the City of Cape Town. An OSS solution named Evergreen was identified by InfoWizz and we (BDS and InfoWizz) proposed to SITA that they partner with us in the customisation of this system for Library Services throughout South Africa. Sadly, although Evergreen meets almost all the requirements for South Africa's public libraries (all that was missing was one module, which is currently in development), SITA opted in 2008 to go for a proprietary system.

An OSS library management system for the City Of Cape Town Solid Waste Department

E-mail Print

Solid Waste is in the process of consolidating all its resources under one newly formed resource centre. They need an electronic tool to record and monitor their resources. They have opted for an open source library management system to do this job.

InfoWizz has been appointed to do the research and business analysis on this project, with Business Data Solutions working on the customisation and implementation of the software. InfoWizz is also doing initial collection management and staff training. We have chosen Evergreen, an open source library management system, for this project.

Knowledge Management for government

Urban Renewal Project LogoIn 2006, InfoWizz was appointed to project manage 2 knowledge management (KM) projects for the Presidential Urban Renewal Programme at the City Of Cape Town. The first of these was a project to develop, through a highly consultative process of stakeholder workshops, a KM strategy for the Urban Renewal Programme. This strategy was intended to ultimately form the blueprint for a KM strategy for the City Of Cape Town. The KM strategy was completed in 2006.

The second project involved the research into and creation of a catalogue of literature on and about the URP. This catalogue now forms the basis for a knowledge base for the URP.

World Cup Accommodation

E-mail Print

There has been a lot of talk about the exorbitant prices of 2010 World Cup accommodation in South Africa.  It seems that some places have increased prices by 100% and even more.  Of course, this has received much press coverage.  Those establishments on the other end of the spectrum have received no coverage, so I thought I'd do my bit for them.

InfoWizz was commissioned to do a website for a newcomer to the accommodation business.  LMR Lodge is new, clean, comfortable, and above all, affordable.  It's good, basic accommodation for travellers who want to visit new places, but not break the bank on accommodation where they will really only be spending their nights.  The LMR Lodge business model makes sense.  They have entered the market at very affordable rates, aiming to entice visitors to Cape Town, and build a loyal following of repeat customers, who will recommend them to others, bringing in more business.
